No, there's no real story behind my epigram. Only that people don't know how to pronounce "Obadike". Good to have you in the blogopsphere, littlemilk. I've linked "Unbeached Whale" to the right. Be well, M
Mendi, this is so funny because I almost started to write a post about how, over the last 2-3 years, I've come across about a handfull of people here in the US whose first language appears to be English who've actually asked me how to pronounce MY last name! It happened just the other day, in fact. Sooooo bizarre. I mean, what *do* children learn these days in school? If a phonetically obvious name causes problems.... anyways I'm sure they must struggle with Obadike. I sometimes wonder if I'm mispronouncing it. Is it "Oh-bah-DEE-kay" or "Oh-BAH-dee-kay"? I'm also glad Littlemilk is blogging!
Ah, well, we tend to say O-bah-DEE-kay, but in Nigeria the pronunciation is somewhere between two, leaning closest to O-bah-DEE-kay. I came up with "nobody came" because lately people have been pronouncing that last syllable "kee" for some reason. Hilarious that English-speaking folks are having trouble with your name!
