Ars Poetica: Why "Artist"
When I have said "I am a poet and artist", I have always felt it to be a denial of the relationship of my practice of poetry to my practice as an artist. The problem is worse than a semantic blur for me. It's a misplacement of my creative core. When I say "I am an artist" and don't tack on "and poet", what I am often saying is that as a poet I am in conversation with conceptual art, with sculpture, with sound art. I hope you hear me.

I hear you. Artist is more encompassing, expansive. And your work gathers together so many media, strands, threads, phonemes even. It's very exciting. Artist indeed!
Always happy to hear from a like mind on this one, John. But then I knew we would see eye to eye.
