More on the CMJ/AfroPunk show: Cody ChusnuTT

I have so many good things to say about being at Cal State LA, but first I want to finish blogging the More CMJ/AfroPunk show. Everybody was good. Unfortunately, we missed seeing Shawn Hewitt -- who we'd really wanted to hear -- but we did get to hear a few songs as we were waiting in that winding line outside the club. We heard he was really good. Then Cody ChesnuTT came on looking a little like Haile Selassie in his cape. (See the image to the left, but know that part of it was about vibe.) ChesnuTT's voice is amazing, angelic, even. It makes for an eerie edge to songs about appropriation and self-destruction. The other night, there was one song where the chorus went "Let's go pop; let's pimp the ghetto" and he sang it with such a sweet voice and joyful smile that the pain in the song was even more highlighted. I haven't figured out how to use what I learned from yet, but, trust me, I was studying.

This sounds like it was not to be missed. I love the image of him in that resplendant cape!

It was a wonderful concert and the cape is part of the experience.
